Historically, the Jane-Finch community has been deemed establishing one of the highest violent crime rates in Ontario (Rigakos et al, 2002). The wider community feels an imminent fear of retaliation, fear of being an innocent bystander . These crime rates have been experienced predominantly amongst African Canadian, Black and racialized families. Most of these crimes occur within individuals of the same racialized background. The contributing factors of structural violence (“black on black” violence), and perpetuated media influence result in the ongoing hopelessness, consistent levels of violence and cycles of recidivism.
For this project, to counter the impacts of structural violence, there is a proposed solution to address youth violence and recidivism through a multi-faceted and balanced enforcement with Direct Intervention. It is important to utilize strategies and interventions that work for the betterment of the community.
